Industry throughout time.

Our world is a changing world, and the industry is not an exception. New construction solutions, materials, elements ... are found periodically.

A discussion established during our exercises in class is the evolution of the industrialization, and how this affects architecture as it is known. With industrialization come new ideas of building, such as the prefabrication and the mass production. This theme was discussed by Ramon Araujo, who talked about the industrialization of spaces and the industrialization of elements. Earlier, Le Corbusier also approached this subject.

With the arrival of industrialization, and the period that this relates to, the needs and way of understanding things of the population changes. Therefore a new way of designing should be adopted. As the previous parameters no longer answer to our needs.

Mass production and prefabricated elements make its way through the industry. Therefore there are two different conceptions of the concept of prefabrication.

We find prefabricated elements, mass produced, that are brought to site and assembled there. The space is designed and we order the pieces that suit its construction. We could say that it is also a matter of economy, and business as the manufacturers create a stock of elements on demand, and its production is not subjected to the exact moment when they are demanded.

Another concept that emerged with prefabrication was the one of Prefabricated Spaces. The design itself could be considered an element, built away from the site and brought to it just to be settled.

Here there is an illustration of the concept industrialization by one of our classmates.
Motion Typography on Flash By Jordi Barceló.

How this changes are affecting architecture is a question generated by the topic. But this changes can be illustrated by nowadays architecture.

The example of La casa por el tejado shows us that modern prefabricated spaces can be in accordance with old buildings.
Their buildings are built with prefabricated elements, and even the spaces could be sometimes considered prefabricated (as in a whole). This new buildings’ location is non other than the roof of old constructions in La Eixample of Barcelona. This way of Building implies a faster execution, sustainable buildings, and preservation of the area.

We could therefore say that industrialization changes through time, so does every element of our society. This changes start as experiments, that sometimes may cause a cultural shock, but as an inherent phase of our world, this changes evolve to finally create solutions to the time’s needs.
