Touch of Tradiotion

Touch of Tradition

'' If a revolution is to come, it will have to come from five senses. '' - Michael Serres

The Pillow Book -  Peter Greenaway
People during nowadays have gone a long way through a progress. Finally though, they become victims of the progress itself. They separate their bodies more and more from their senses. Without knowing anything about themselves, their traditions, their nature, they are confused. They should start exploring their bodies and the world by senses.

Thinking hand - Juhani Pallasmaa
In general, the most important sense for architects and artist is the sense of touch. With our hands we can touch the architecture in order to understand the nature and the real shape of things. The hands improve impossible tasks to recreate the very essence of the object. It is the meaning of life in all sensory manifestations.

‘‘The hand is the window into the mind.‘‘
Immanueal Kant
The rape of Proserpina
Bernini
The Incredulity of Saint Thomas
Caravaggio

Another important knowledge, which we can gain with our hands, is the actual contact with the material. The more we know about material the better. We can use it to design. Architects should also be artisans and moreover they should be involved into the whole process of construction, not only create the proposal in the end as it has been done in the past.

‘’The tradition of craftsmanship is clearly gaining increasing value and appreciation in today’s reality of the technological world, mechanical production, and the regrettable loss of the touch of the human hand in our mechanically mass-produced products and environments. In traditional cultures the entire life world is the product of human hands, and the daily sphere of work and life means an endless passing of the hand skills and their products on to others and traditional life world is a continuous meeting and joining of the hands of successive generations.’’ -  Juhani Pallasmaa

Figurative architects should touched on local human needs and diversity which is resulting  from them. Consequently, the essential time dimension of art points to the past rather than the future significant art and architecture maintains roots and traditions instead of uprooting and inventing.

Humanity was on the brink of rebirth in the beginning of the 20th century. It was necessary
to find new forms of expression. The main theme in that period was to shake off everything old, embellished or unhygienic. But the main futurisms manifest of the whole modern architecture was speed, progress and science. The era without touch began. People forgot about their traditions, which are a direct link to the past and the cultural heritage. Mass production has destroyed uniqueness and local diversity.

Local diversity is a way to design buildings, a form of emphasizing effectiveness, energy consumption, reasonable conceived proposals and self-sufficiency. The main part within such a project focuses on natural materials, which can be found mainly in surrounding and local areas. Furthermore, the material should be recyclable and reusable. This in turn obviously saves energy within the entire construction process as well as during the long process of maintenance. In other words: Sustainable architecture is coherent and temporally adapted architecture. The colors and materials are not fashion trends but they have typically local ornaments or just pigments from the area, which enables diversity within the creation. The more varied the architecture of the city is, the better remembered it will be in the end .
